The foundation of the modern Western World was constructed by eminent European monarchs such as Charlemagne and Napoleon. There were numerous kings that had an impact on Europe, yet some were not as celebrated as other rulers of their time. One of these noteworthy monarchs, Ludwig II, ruled Bavaria from 1864 to 1886. The region known as Bavaria was originally inhabited by the Celts in 15BC. It was not until the sixth century that the Baiuoariis invaded the land and named the territory Bavaria. Bavaria was primarily ruled by two dynasties, the Guelphs and the Wittelsbachs. The Wittelsbachs began their reign in Bavaria as dukes in 1180 (Behringer). With the fall of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 Maximilian IV, later known as Maximilian I, became the first king of Bavaria. In 1842 Maximilian I’s grandson Maximilian II married the daughter of Prince William of Prussia, Marie Friederike Franziska Hedwig. In 1845, she gave birth to Ludwig (Wikipedia). Ludwig went on to be one of the most infamous Bavarian kings.
